Tummy Time: strengthens, stimulates, and develops your baby
Share
If you're reading this, it's because, like me, you want the best for your little treasure. In the first few months, we're flooded with information, care tips, and an endless list of "essential things," aren't we?
Amidst this whirlwind, there's a simple yet powerful practice that often raises questions: Tummy Time.
I know. Sometimes it seems like they don't like it much, right? That protesting cry, that uncomfortable look... I've been there and felt the same hesitation.
But today, I want to share with you not only why this practice is one of the greatest allies in your baby's development, but also how to turn it into a moment of connection, discovery, and great security within your home.
And, of course, how to choose the best allies, such as Afetto's cribs, to create a beautiful and welcoming environment.
What exactly is Tummy Time?
Simply put, it's the time your baby spends awake, supervised, on their stomach (belly down). It might seem like a small gesture, but it's a complete workout for their rapidly developing body.

In the first few months, babies spend most of their time on their backs (for sleep safety, following pediatric recommendations), so Tummy Time is an opportunity for balance, strengthening muscles that would otherwise not be used.
Important to know: Tummy Time should always be done on a firm, flat, and safe surface on the floor, such as a playmat or a rubber mat made for babies. It should never be practiced inside the crib, on the sofa, bed, or on elevated and soft surfaces.
The crib is a sacred and safe environment for sleep. Mixing these functions can compromise the baby's safety and the association they make of the crib as a place of rest. We will detail this further!
Why is this practice essential?
Let's detail the incredible benefits that a few minutes a day can provide:
1. Strengthening neck, shoulder, and trunk muscles: This is the most visible benefit. To lift their head and look at the world, the baby uses and strengthens their cervical and dorsal muscles. This is the fundamental basis for all the motor milestones to come: rolling, sitting, crawling, and finally, walking. A strong core is like firm foundations for a small house.
2. Prevention of Positional Plagiocephaly (flat head): As they spend a lot of time on their backs, it's common for babies to develop flattening on the back of their head. Tummy Time relieves constant pressure in this area, helping to shape the head in a more rounded and natural way.
3. Development of gross and fine motor skills: By supporting themselves on their arms and trying to move, they are practicing the coordination and balance necessary for larger movements (gross motor skills).
In addition, by extending their little hands and trying to grab a toy in front of them, they are improving hand-eye coordination and fine motor control.
4. A new literal perspective of the world: On their tummy, the baby's field of vision changes completely. They no longer just see the ceiling or the face of whoever is holding them and begin to explore the floor, toys, and textures of the mat. This visual and cognitive stimulation is incredibly rich, sharpening curiosity and spatial awareness.
5. Helps in the development of the sensory system: Pressure on the belly and chest provides a deep sense of touch that can be very calming and organizing for the baby's nervous system. Different textures on the mat (soft, rough, cool) also enrich this sensory experience.
6. Facilitates gas release and relieves colic: The gentle pressure on the abdominal area during Tummy Time can help mobilize trapped gas, bringing significant relief for episodes of colic, so common in the first months.
7. Foundation for future skills: The strengthening and coordination worked on in this position are directly transferred to skills such as rolling, reaching for objects, sitting unsupported, and crawling. It is an investment in your child's motor future.
The Playmat is ideal because:
• Stable surface: provides the necessary resistance for the baby to support themselves with their little hands and push the floor, strengthening their upper limbs.
• Safety in case of rolling: when the baby starts to roll (one of the fruits of Tummy Time!), being on the floor eliminates the risk of falls. The rubber playmat also cushions this movement.
• Free space to explore: on the floor, the baby has the freedom to move, turn, try to crawl, and explore toys around without barriers.
• Clear association of activities: The baby begins to understand that this colorful mat is a place for active interaction, play, and discovery.
Why the crib is not the place for Tummy Time:
• Often soft surfaces: The crib mattress is designed for sleeping comfort, not to provide the firmness necessary for adequate support during activity.
• Risk of getting entangled and suffocating: crib sheets, blankets, and bumper pads (which are not recommended for sleep safety) can pose a danger during an active movement activity like Tummy Time.
• Compromises safe sleep association: The crib should be an environment of calm and rest. Introducing stimulating activities there can confuse the baby and make it difficult to fall asleep, as they will associate that space with play and effort.
• Limited space and vision: The crib bars limit the field of vision and physical space for exploration, restricting the cognitive and motor benefits of the practice.
In summary: Crib = safe sleep and rest. Playmat = activity, exploration, and motor development. Maintaining this separation is an act of care that benefits your baby's development and safety.
“But my baby always cries when I put them on their tummy!” Survival Guide to Tummy Time
This is absolutely normal and common. For the baby, it's a new and challenging position that requires effort. Here are foolproof strategies to make this moment more enjoyable on the mat:
→ Start early and without pressure: You can start with very short sessions, 1 to 2 minutes, as early as the first weeks of life. Do it after a diaper change or when the baby is alert and calm, never when sleepy or with a very full stomach.
→ Your lap counts too! Tummy Time can begin on your own body. Lie semi-reclined and place the baby on their tummy on your chest/torso. Contact with you, your scent, and your voice will calm them as they exercise their neck to look at you. It's a gentle transition to the mat.
→ Be the best companion: Don't put them alone on the mat and leave. Lie down facing them, at the same level. Make funny faces, sing, talk—your face is the most interesting toy in the world for them.
→ Incorporate into routine, but be flexible: Try to do small sessions several times a day. It can be after the morning bath, before the afternoon nap... But observe your baby. If they're more irritable today, reduce the time. Tomorrow might be better.
→ Gradually increase: Little by little, extend the duration. The goal is to reach about 30 to 60 total minutes of Tummy Time per day, by around 3 months, always broken into sessions throughout the day.
Afetto Cribs
While the playmat on the floor is the stage for active discoveries, the crib is the cozy corner for rest. And choosing this magical place is one of the most important decisions for the baby's room. That's why I want to introduce you to Afetto's cribs.
After so much stimulation, exercise, and new experiences during Tummy Time, your baby will need deep and restful sleep. The crib is where this magic happens, and it needs to be a place of absolute safety, comfort, and peace.
Therefore, choosing it goes far beyond aesthetics; it's a decision that involves safety, functionality, and the creation of a haven of affection.
Afetto perfectly understands this duality: the need for a stimulating environment for play and a quiet corner for sleep. Their cribs are designed to be this safe haven, with features every mother seeks:
• Safety that calms a mother's heart: All models comply with the most stringent safety standards. The spacing between the bars is precise to avoid any risk, and the materials are of the highest quality: solid wood, with water-based, 100% non-toxic paint.
You can rest assured knowing that, at rest time, your child is in a healthy and protected environment.
• Design that welcomes and inspires: Afetto cribs have a clean yet incredibly welcoming design. The lines are soft, the details are carefully thought out to integrate beauty and functionality. They create an atmosphere of tranquility in the room that invites sleep. It's the aesthetic of affection.
• Functionality that helps with routine: Many models feature an adjustable mattress base height. In the first few months, you keep it higher, saving your back when putting the baby down and picking them up.
As they grow and start to stand, you lower the mattress base, ensuring they remain safe inside the crib. A detail that makes a huge difference in the daily routine.
• Durability that is part of history: Investing in an Afetto crib is thinking long-term. This crib will accompany your child for years, witnessing nights of sleep, stories told at the bedside, and overcoming fears. It becomes more than just furniture; it becomes part of the family's history.
• Stability that conveys confidence: The robustness and firmness of the structure give a sense of solidity. A baby who feels that their "nest" is stable feels more secure to relax and fall asleep. It is both physical and emotional security.
Having an Afetto crib completes your baby's development cycle. On the mat on the floor, they strengthen, explore, and challenge themselves. In the Afetto crib, they find a firm and safe embrace to rest, process all their learning, and recharge for a new day of discoveries.
These are two distinct but complementary environments that, together, create the perfect ecosystem for healthy and happy growth.
How to prepare the safest and most comfortable corner for Tummy Time (and for the family!)
Let's then set up this special dual space: the activity area on the floor and the sleeping corner. As we've mentioned, the playmat is the star of Tummy Time.
Choose a rubber mat that is firm, washable, and has an interesting design. It will be the base for all motor explorations. Position it in an airy place, with good natural light, away from drafts and furniture with sharp corners.
Position the crib against an interior wall, away from windows, curtains, and cords. Fill it only with the essentials: a firm mattress appropriate for the crib size, and a tightly fitted sheet.
No bumpers, pillows, stuffed animals, or loose blankets for small babies. Let the safe and functional beauty of the Afetto crib be the highlight. Beside it, a comfortable armchair for you to create incredible loving memories.
For the mat area, make the most of natural light during the day. For the crib corner and for nighttime, use lamps with indirect, warm light (amber or yellow), preferably with a dimmer switch. Soft light helps produce melatonin, the sleep hormone.
Modulated sensory stimuli (for the mat area):
• Visual: colorful (but not overwhelming) mobiles at a safe distance, high-contrast books (black, white, and red) open in front of them.
• Auditory: Soft music or nature sounds at a low volume during activity. The best sound, however, remains your voice.
• Tactile: Offer toys with different textures – soft, rough, rubbery for them to try to reach and touch during Tummy Time.
Practical and safe storage: Afetto's stackable chest is perfect for placing next to the mat to store toys, keeping the environment organized and safe, without tripping hazards.
Personal touch and coziness: this is the most important element. The comfortable armchair near the crib, a special blanket folded, a picture on the wall... details that make the space unique and full of love.
Family, Tummy Time is a special invitation for you to disconnect from distractions, sit on the floor, and enter your baby's slow and fascinating rhythm. It's not a competition of time or performance. Some days will be great, others not so much. That's okay.
What matters is presence, patience, and the celebration of every small step forward – the first time they lift their head, the first roll, the smile of satisfaction at reaching a dream.
By creating these two distinct and complementary corners at home – the mat on the floor, vibrant and inviting to action, and the Afetto crib, serene and inviting to rest – you are providing your child with the perfect environment to flourish. You are telling them: “You have the freedom to explore and be strong, and you have a safe haven to rest and feel loved. The world is yours, and my embrace is here for you.”
This is the true meaning of Tummy Time and the conscious choice of every element in the room: much more than strengthening muscles, it is strengthening bonds. It is planting the seeds of curiosity, autonomy, security, and confidence that will blossom throughout that little being's life.
You're doing an amazing job. Trust your instincts, celebrate every minute (even the challenging ones), and enjoy this unique journey.
With love,
